COED Oro Holds Combined Convocation, Honors Eminent Nigerians, Highlights Its Challenges
No fewer than one thousand, eight hundred and nine students will be graduating from the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, in Irepodun local government area of the state in its latest combined convocation ceremony.
The Provost of the College, Professor Mukaila Aremu stated this on Tuesday during a press briefing as part of activities for the 13th combined convocation ceremony.
Professor Aremu said from the list, one thousand, seven hundred and ninety two would be awarded National Certificate of Education (NCE) and seventeen would be awarded Professional Diploma of Education (PDE).
He added that awards and honors would also be presented to outstanding students, community leaders, government officials, staff of the college, and alumni who have made significant contributions to the college and society.
The Provost also noted that some eminent Nigerians who have also contributed to the education sector would also be honoured with College fellowship award, which included Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, the state APC chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, Asiwaju of Igbomina land, Chief Abdulraheem Oladimeji, OFR, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Mary Arinde, Professor Wale Sulaiman, CON, among others.
The provost announced that the graduands are between 2018 and 2024 academic session respectively.
While highlighting his achievements since becoming the Provost of the college in 2021, Professor Aremu appreciated the present administration under the leadership of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for the continuous support being enjoyed by the college over the years.
Meanwhile, the Provost, Kwara State College of Education, Oro, Professor Mukaila Aremu has called on the state government to consider the dual mode education policy for the college as approved by the Federal Government where by Colleges of Education will be awarding NCE and Degree certificates to address dwindling enrolment and reduce dependency on the State Government.
The provost who highlighted various challenges of the state owned institution, noted that there is need for government to increase its subvention due to high wage bill and operational cost in running the college as a result of annual salary increment, annual promotion, inflation, fuel subsidy removal in the country and constraint to increase school fee.
While lamenting that no single vehicle from the State government for the principal officers, including the Provost. Professor Aremu appealed that government should make provision for official vehicles and consider the College in the distribution of Bus as it was extended to some institutions in the state.
He maintained that other challenges among others included non-implementation of 100% Consolidated Tertiary Salary Structure (CONTEDISS), Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) for non–academic and academic staff respectively.
The provost however appealed to the state government to rehabilitate the College’s internal access roads, which he said needed urgent attention.
