Just In: Detained Minors Regain Freedom

Detained minors over alleged involvement in #EndBadGovernance protests have been released from detention.

According to reports, the minors were released on Tuesday morning and were being taken to Aso Rock to foster their reunion with their families.

This latest development was as a result of President Bola Tinubu’s directive on Monday.

The Trial Judge at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, struck out the suit following an application by the counsel to the Attorney General of the Federation, M. D Abubakar, to take over and discontinue the suit.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, who was represented by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar at the proceedings announced the exercise of his power of section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to take over the case from the Inspector General of Police.

Tinubu had instructed the Attorney General of the Federation to take all necessary steps to secure the immediate release of minors held by the Nigeria Police in connection with recent protests.

He also tasked the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has been tasked with facilitating the safe return of the minors to their families.

Similarly, the Inspector- General of Police ordered a probe of the alleged maltreatment of the minors in detention.
